Phase 1 Orthodontics In San Francisco
Give your child the gift of a healthy, beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime. Our early interceptive treatments address orthodontic issues before they become more complex.

What is Phase 1 Orthodontics?
Phase 1 Orthodontics, also known as early interceptive treatment, is designed for children typically between the ages of 7 and 10. This proactive approach addresses orthodontic issues while a child's jaw is still developing, potentially simplifying or eliminating the need for more extensive treatment later. It focuses on creating a healthy foundation for your child's growing smile.

The Benefits of Phase 1 Ortho
Early orthodontic intervention can provide numerous advantages for your child's oral health and overall development. Here are key benefits of Phase 1 Orthodontics:
Correct Harmful Habits
Early intervention allows us to address habits like thumb-sucking or tongue thrusting that can affect dental development. Correcting these issues early can prevent more serious problems down the line.
Guide Jaw Growth
Phase 1 treatment can help guide proper jaw growth, ensuring there's adequate space for incoming permanent teeth. This can reduce the likelihood of crowding or impacted teeth in the future.
Improve Self-Esteem
By addressing visible orthodontic issues early, we can boost your child's confidence during crucial developmental years. A healthy, aligned smile can have a positive impact on social interactions and self-image.
Types of Phase 1 Ortho
Oral Appliances
Various appliances like space maintainers or habit-breaking appliances may be used. These custom devices address specific issues like preserving space for adult teeth or correcting harmful habits like thumb-sucking.
Expanders
Palatal expanders widen the upper jaw to create more space for crowded teeth. This treatment can also improve breathing and prevent the need for tooth extractions later.
Braces
Partial braces may be used to begin aligning certain teeth. These are typically applied to the front teeth to address specific concerns and guide proper growth.
Clear Aligners
In some cases, clear aligners can be used for mild to moderate alignment issues. These removable trays offer a discreet and comfortable option for early treatment.

The Phase 1 Ortho Treatment Process
At Lyfesmiles Orthodontics, we've designed our Phase 1 treatment process to be thorough, effective, and child-friendly. Here's what you can expect:
Initial Evaluation
We start with a comprehensive examination of your child's teeth, jaw, and overall oral development. Dr. Ubaldo will discuss any concerns and explain if Phase 1 treatment could be beneficial.
Customized Treatment Plan
If Phase 1 is recommended, we'll create a personalized treatment plan. This may involve one or more of the treatment types discussed above, tailored to your child's specific needs.
Active Treatment and Monitoring
During the active phase of treatment, we'll see your child regularly to make adjustments and monitor progress. We'll keep you informed every step of the way, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
Many children will need a second phase of treatment (Phase 2) after all permanent teeth have erupted. However, Phase 1 often simplifies and shortens this later treatment. Dr. Ubaldo will discuss the likelihood of Phase 2 treatment during your consultations.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. This allows us to identify and address any potential issues early.
